Ovarian cancer occurs in the ovaries. Well, the ovaries are the female reproductive organs. They are located in the pelvis region, one on either side of the uterus. They produce eggs and hormones such as estrogen and progesterone which regulates menstruation and pregnancy.
With rising cases of Ovarian cancer WHO declared 12 Ovarian cancer within every 100,000 females.
In India, Ovarian cancer cases were 43,886 for year 2020 and likely to be 49,644 in year 2025.
Evenafter reading these severe numbers on our News screen, there is lack of awareness and more of myths settled in our minds..
So here is a little try to bust such myths leading us to misconceptions about such cancerous disease.
Read out loud and remember these top 5 myths and their actual facts that can prevent you crossing the red line of this dangerous disease ...
Myth 1
Ovarian cancer only affects older women
Yes it's True to a certain level that highly aged females develop Ovarian cancer after menopause but cases are also arising in younger females too.
As investigation reports 1 out of every 5 women diagnosed with Ovarian cancer is younger.
Myth 2
Ovarian cancer is always detected through a Pap test
No. A Pap test can't reliably detect ovarian cancer. A Pap test can detect cervical cancer .
Very rarely, ovarian cancer cells can be detected during a Pap test. If the ovarian cancer cells travel away from your ovaries through your fallopian tubes and uterus to the area around your cervix, the ovarian cancer cells could be collected during a Pap test. But this is rare, so the Pap test isn't a reliable test for ovarian cancer.
Myth 3
All ovarian cysts are a type of ovarian cancer
Ovarian cysts, fluid-filled sacs that develop in and on the ovaries, can be cancerous, but the likelihood of that depends on when in a woman’s life they occur.
Before menopause, or the cessation of menstruation, ovarian cysts are less likely to be cancerous. They are more likely the result of normal ovulation and other causes. After menopause, new cysts are somewhat more likely to be cancerous, though the vast majority will be harmless.
Myth 4
Ovarian cancer is always hereditary
Most women have a chance of developing ovarian cancer during their lifetime.
However, those who have a family history are at higher risk of developing ovarian cancer.
Some women with a family history may have inherited a faulty gene which increases the risk of cancer, this is called hereditary cancer and includes the genes BRCA1, BRCA2, RAD and some other genes.
But only about one-tenth of ovarian cancers are attributed to family history.
And any women with low healthy lifestyle have chances to attain this disease.
Myth 5
Early indications of ovarian cancer in women are non-existent
While it’s true that the symptoms of ovarian cancer can feel like other common sensations, certain changes in your body can be a sign that you should talk to your doctor.
Some small changes as such- feel bloated, press on their abdomen and feel something different, change in clothing fit a bit tighter, changes to your bowel habits, irregular menstrual cycles.
Keeping a watch on changes can mean the difference between early and late detection of ovarian cancer.
